What drives the bill
You may pay separately to ingest, index, store and query logs, as well as to monitor hosts. Vendors charge per GB, event or active metric series. This calculator estimates logs and hosts only, not a full APM setup. It assumes 1 KB per event for event-based prices, and some estimates leave out query compute. Check those extra costs before comparing totals.
Costs the calculator leaves out
- Custom metrics and high cardinality. Every unique tag combination can be a billed series.
- APM, traces, real-user monitoring and synthetics, each usually billed separately.
- Longer retention, and rehydrating archived logs.
- Seats for everyone who needs to look at a dashboard.
When paying more makes sense
The big platforms connect infrastructure, APM, logs and security in one interface with mature alerting and many integrations. That can save time for teams without observability specialists. If logs dominate your bill, piloting a cheaper log store while keeping metrics where they are can limit the scope of a move. OpenTelemetry helps with portability, but queries, dashboards, alerts and custom instrumentation still need review and often rebuilding.
