What drives the bill
Vendors charge per source image, per transformation, per GB delivered, or in credits shared across all three. Your mix matters: a marketing site might have few originals but many views, while a marketplace adds new photos every day. Stored originals and unique-image charges can become expensive for the latter.
Costs the calculator leaves out
- What counts as a “source image” or a “transformation”. Vendors differ on whether cached variants, format changes (WebP/AVIF) and stored originals count.
- Storage of originals, which some vendors charge for when they host them.
- Video, which usually has separate and much higher pricing.
- Overage pricing on plans that cap usage instead of billing pay-as-you-go.
When paying more makes sense
Managed platforms may include asset management, AI cropping, background removal and a media library for non-engineers. If you only need resizing, cropping and format conversion, consider imgproxy or Thumbor behind a CDN. You control the image URLs, but also own deployment, updates and capacity planning.
